Formula
Worked Example
A flock of broiler chickens consumes a total of 500 kg of feed over a growing period. During that same period, the flock gains a total of 250 kg of live weight.
An FCR of 2.0 means that 2 kg of feed were consumed for each 1 kg of weight gain in this example. The number is a mathematical ratio; whether it is favorable requires a benchmark for the same production context.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total amount of feed consumed during the measurement period and select the weight unit.
- Enter the total weight gained (final weight minus initial weight) and select the weight unit.
- Click Calculate FCR to see your result.
Both inputs are converted to the same unit before calculation, so you can use different units for feed and weight gain.
Understanding Your Result
When measurements are made consistently, a lower FCR means less feed was consumed per unit of weight gain, while a higher FCR means more feed was consumed per unit of gain.
FCR does not have a universal “good,” “average,” or “poor” rating. Meaningful comparison requires a benchmark that matches the species, life stage, diet, production system, time period, and measurement basis. This calculator therefore reports the ratio without assigning a performance rating.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no universal “good” FCR across species or production systems. Compare an FCR only with a reliable benchmark that uses the same species, life stage, diet, conditions, time period, and measurement method.
In this calculator, FCR is feed consumed divided by weight gained. The displayed feed-efficiency percentage is the mathematical inverse: weight gained divided by feed consumed, multiplied by 100.
FCR is dimensionless when feed consumed and weight gained are expressed on the same weight basis. This calculator converts both inputs to kilograms internally before dividing, so compatible weight units can be mixed.
Sources & Methodology
Formula: FCR = total feed consumed ÷ total weight gained. Both inputs are converted to kilograms before division so the ratio is calculated on a consistent weight basis.
Interpretation: This page intentionally does not publish species-wide ratings or benchmark ranges. Those claims are context-sensitive and should only be added when a specific authoritative source supports the exact species, life stage, production system, and measurement method being described.
- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), “If I Decide to Feed My Animals, How Much Feed Will I Need?” — defines FCR as the amount of feed needed per unit of animal weight increase.
- Utah State University Extension, “Market Animal Feed Efficiency: A Tool for Evaluating Feed Conversion” — describes feed conversion as feed required per unit of market-animal weight gain.
This calculator uses deterministic arithmetic only. It does not use AI, prediction, simulation, or a hidden performance-rating model.

What to keep in mind
- Feed and gain should be measured over the same period.
- Use compatible mass units or convert them first.
- Species, life stage, feed composition, environment, and production system affect interpretation.
